My Role As Social Media Manager At Minto Branding

Naomi Ord,Social Media Manager at Minto shares an insight into her role and the women who inspire her!

Tell us a bit about your background and your Social Media Manager role at Minto Branding.

I’m part of the social media management team at Minto Branding, a graphic design company in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. I work alongside Boryana, and together we manage 9 different clients, ranging from oil and gas companies, to care homes, and accountancy firms.

I previously worked at Starbucks and managed their social media account for 3 years, if I hadn’t volunteered myself to take on the social media duties there, I would never have been approached by Minto to apply for the role of a social media manager – so I’d advise anyone who is interested in this role to reach out to their current employer and offer to do some posts for them!

What is a typical day at Minto like?

I’m still a relatively new member of the team here at Minto, what surprised me the most about this role is there is a lot of marketing involved. Creating the content and writing posts is only a small part of the job, there is a lot of researching and thinking outside the box! Most clients want to sell their product online or show the world who they are, so you have to keep an eye on certain trends online and apply it to your clients service/product. Trying to stand out from the competition isn’t always easy, so it’s nice to have Boryana to share ideas with.

A typical day for me at Minto usually begins with a large cup of coffee! I’ll usually spend my day researching, writing up blog posts, creating posts, and thinking of new concepts ideas for our clients. I spend a lot of time trying to understand my client’s industry, which requires a lot of research, thankfully research is something I’m pretty good at after studying law for 4 years! I’ll finish my degree this spring, and then I’ll be working with Minto full-time which is really exciting! Prior to studying law I was an art student, so I’ve always been a creative person and although I really enjoy studying law, I aspired to have a job where I could be creative! So being a social media manager was an easy choice for me.

Women who inspire me

There are a lot of women that inspire me, particularly women who broke down gender barriers in their field  – Rosalind Franklin and Marie Curie to name two, but I’m most inspired  by the women in my life. My mum has always been a hard worker, waking up at 4am most mornings to do a very physical job, and always supporting me in my own journey with my career – whether it was studying art, or law, or being a social media manager. I have her to thank for my work ethic and my drive. Striving to achieve your goals is that bit easier when you have a strong support network around you, the women in my life are really amazing for that.

Having strong women to look up to is so important for me, it really pushes me to get up in the morning and get the work done. I’ve even got a vision board by my bed filled with motivating quotes and photos of women in business, I have a clear idea of where I want to be in the future and I know it’ll take hard work to get there. Sometimes I refer to that viral quote from Kim Kardashian about getting up off your butt and getting the work done, I say it in jest, but I actually really love that – just get up, do the work and do what needs to be done.
